The following is a rough translation from the French of: (1) a review, published on the Belgian online site Oser Dire [Dare to Speak], of French Historian Paul-Éric Blanrue’s book, Sarkozy, Israel, and the Jews; and (2) an interview with the author, published by Koffi Cadjehoun, on his blog, Au Cours du Réel [Now to the Real].

Dare to Speak New in June 2009

Today, in France, to talk calmly and frankly about Israel has become impossible. The question is taboo. Anyone who ventures to criticize the Jewish state risks being characterized as anti-Semitic. In the “homeland of human rights and freedom of expression,” [«patrie des Droits de l’Homme et de la liberté d’expression»] a thought crime has been established in politics and history. Instead of open discussion, a dictatorship of thinking has been introduced … In 1967, it was through the voice of President Charles de Gaulle, that France first distanced itself from Israel. Under the previous regime, this country had enjoyed great privileges, since it is through the Fourth Republic that the Jewish State had acquired the atom bomb. The French presidents who succeeded the General tried hard, in his image, to maintain the balance between the two parties, Palestinians and Israelis.

But suddenly everything changed in 2007 with the election of Nicolas Sarkozy to the presidency. He had long been the leader of a party called “Gaullist”. But on the question of Israel, he has turned his back decisively on the position taken by the General [Charles de Gaulle]. Now advocating the quasi-unconditional defence of Israel, Sarkozy is implementing a policy that is the inverted mirror image of that of the founder of the Fifth Republic. For him, any criticism of Israel is a sign of anti-Semitism.

A historian specializing in mystifications, Paul-Éric Blanrue refuses to close his mind. The aim of his book is to raise awareness of the danger represented by the new French foreign policy. Paul-Éric Blanrue opens our eyes to the already out-of-date aspects of Nicolas Sarkozy’s strange choices. He reveals why the French president has embarked on a path that goes against the interests of his country and may soon lead France into major conflicts, in the Lebanon, in Iran, or elsewhere. He describes, one by one, the pro-Israeli networks that serve this strategy, shows their power, indicates their blindness, and provides the names of the main personalities who are part of it. He rejects the systematic equation of Judaism and Zionism. He calls on the Jews of France to get rid of their official spokesmen, who represent at most a sixth of them only, and encourages them to rebel against a policy which ultimately will prove disastrous for them and for all the French people. Finally, the author advances propositions that revive the traditional boldness of French critical thought and which can once again unite the French people in a generous project, to end the communitarianism [communautarisme] recklessly imported from the United States. www.oserdire.com
